Martenitza with Martin Koenig and Sound Pictures of Bulgaria

March 1, 2020 @ 3:00 pm 6:00 pm

Bulgarian Society PCHELA is honored to host an exclusive presentation by MARTIN KOENIG of his work SOUND PORTRAITS FROM BULGARIA: A Journey to a Vanished World (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings 2019.)Between 1966 and 1979, educator and cultural documentarian Martin Koenig made half a dozen trips to Bulgaria. Working in villages throughout the country, Koenig filmed, recorded, and photographed the lively, yet endangered, aspects of Bulgaria’s traditional culture, providing a vivid, first-hand account of joyous rituals, celebrations, and festivals. Join us for a live presentation and film viewing and meet the author who not only spent over 50 years documenting authentic Bulgarian folk music and dance. It is Martin’s and his colleague, Ethel Raim’s, original recording of the song “Izlel Je Delyo Haidutin” performed by the Bulgarian folksinger Valya Balkanska that was included on a gold disc launched into space in 1977 as part of a NASA project to bring a greeting from Planet Earth to any alien life forms out there in the far reaches of the universe. Advanced copies of the beautiful hardcover SOUND PORTRAITS FROM BULGARIA: A Journey to a Vanished World, Bilingual edition, 2 CD, 144-page book will be offered at the presentation. The event is open to the public and is appropriate for all ages. The film is in English with Bulgarian subtitles.
